15 of the Best Holbox Bars and Beach Clubs: Photos and More Details
1. Lazaro Rooftop

What’s the vibe: Boho island rooftop
How much for a drink: Approx £10 for a cocktail
Top tip: One of the few wine bars on the island – try the orange wine!
Perfect for people watching, this boho-chic bar is tucked away on a terrace overlooking the main square, so you can’t get a better location.
It’s all earthy tones and rattan seating that suits the island vibes, with a top-tier drinks list to match. There’s even an extensive wine list (rare for Holbox bars), with decent bottles on it, perfect for those moments when a margarita just won’t do.
We actually went to Lazaro multiple times during our time in Holbox because it ticked so many boxes. We loved heading there for a pre-dinner drink, enjoying the moody music and vibes and watching the world go by in the square.
2. Luuma

What’s the vibe: Elevated secret garden
How much for a drink: Approx £12 for a cocktail
Top tip: Be sure to book a table in advance, this place fills up fast!
Luuma is one of the pricier Holbox bars on this list, but you’re paying for that Tulum-style hidden jungle vibe, and the cocktails are pretty special too.
The floor is dusted with sand, and there’s greenery all around, so be sure to layer on some mosquito repellent before you go.
Luuma is also one of the top Holbox restaurants, but if you want to go for a drink, you can sit up at the counter watching the pro mixologists at work. There’s no generic drinks list here; it’s all about signature drinks with a Mexican flair.
3. Hot Corner

What’s the vibe: Caribbean party central
How much for a drink: Approx £8 for a cocktail
Top tip: Go between 10pm and midnight for salsa dancing in the street!
I can’t reasonably include a list of the best Holbox bars without including Hot Corner – known as the most iconic local bar on the island.
Honestly though? We found the music was a little bit loud and rowdy for our liking. Despite the famous reputation, the bar is usually half-empty through the evening and only gets busy very late at night.
The locals prefer to grab a drink from the nearby shop and sit on the road to enjoy the music instead.
Having said this, it gets more lively as the evening wears on, and if you’re looking for a late-night party spot, this is it!
It’s got that classic, colourful Caribbean vibe inside, and keeps the music going until 2am.
4. Bar Zomay

What’s the vibe: Ultimate sunset spot
How much for a drink: Approx £9 for a cocktail
Top tip: Get there at least 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot.
Part of the Zomay hotel, this is a chilled-out bar and beach club that boasts one of the best sunset views on the island. Because it juts out on a south-west-facing patch of sand, you get a front-row seat to watch the sun kiss the horizon goodbye.
We went on a few occasions, particularly because this bar was located approximately halfway from our hotel, AWA, into the centre of town, so it was the perfect sunset pitstop.
They had a vibey electronic DJ set to set the atmosphere, and they lay out lots of extra chairs to accommodate the influx of sunset-hunters!
5. La Combi

What’s the vibe: Lively late-night spot with live music
How much for a drink: Approx £7 for a cocktail
Top tip: Cocktails aren’t the best here – opt for a mixed drink or beer instead!
This place is Hot Corner’s biggest competition when it comes to jostling for the top party spot on the island.
The atmosphere is loud and lively, and we found it was busier than Hot Corner earlier in the evening, so we actually preferred it.
The decor is pretty basic, but there’s a small stage where they have a live band every night – expect everything from traditional Mariachi bands to modern DJ sets.
It’s also a sports bar, so I assume it would be the best place to go if you’re hoping to catch a big game!
All-in-all, a great place for a lively drink or two and a dance if you feel like it after dinner.
6. ROOTS Pizza

What’s the vibe: Caribbean pizzeria meets local live music
How much for a drink: Approx £7 for a cocktail
Top tip: Try the lobster pizza, AKA the Holbox special!
ROOTS is quite a well-known pizzeria on the island, but I feel it’s underrated as one of the best Holbox bars – with some of the best live music we saw during our whole trip.
We went in there to get the iconic lobster pizza, otherwise known as the Holboxeña, because the island’s famous for it. While it is double the cost of any other pizza on the menu, we felt it was worth it for the quality and quantity of lobster provided – our pizza was absolutely loaded with it.
They had some fantastic live music on the small stage, and the atmosphere was just right – not too loud, like some bars in Hobox can get. We ended up staying for a few drinks, and I ordered the Sangria which was surprisingly good (although a bit sweeter than a traditional Spanish sangria).
The whole place is set up in an open-air garden, and the furniture is all carved from wooden tree trunks, which is pretty cool.
Even if you don’t fancy trying the pizza, I’d definitely recommend swinging by ROOTS for a drink and maybe a snack or two if you can.
7. Fuego Beach by AWA

What’s the vibe: Classy beach club in a quieter part of the island
How much for a drink: Approx £12 for a cocktail
Top tip: Get there early if you want sun beds for the day!
Fuego Beach Club is located in AWA Boutique Hotel, where we stayed, meaning we spent a lot of time there.
It’s quite a small beach club, about a 15 to 20 minute walk away from the centre of town, so be prepared for a chilled out vibe in a stylish atmosphere. Think low-key music, tiki torches, and the sound of the sea kissing the shore.
One of the best things about Fuego was how good the food and drinks were. You really can’t go wrong, from the artisanal cocktails to the crispy shrimp tacos. Even the salads were top-notch.
Since it’s a small beach club and there are hotel guests, you need to arrive early if you want to reserve a sunbed for the day.
I’d definitely recommend Fuego for a blissed-out beach day, even though the prices are a little higher than some other places on the island.
You can also come back in the evening, when the vibe is moody and romantic with beach bonfires and low-key DJ sets.
8. Mandarina

What’s the vibe: Elegant Mediterranean-style seaside spot
How much for a drink: Approx £12 for a cocktail
Top tip: Don’t miss the outdoor seashell shower.
If you’re looking for Holbox bars with a slightly higher-end vibe, this is the spot for you. Part of the five-star Casa las Tortugas hotel, Mandarina is a spotless beach club with an upscale Mediterranean vibe.
The whole place feels ultra calm and clean, with powdery soft sand and gently swaying palms, strung with fairy lights. The atmosphere is especially romantic at sunset.
The menu is a little more elevated than most (as are the prices), but it is worth it in my opinion for a special meal or drink in a dreamy, relaxing atmosphere.
Sometimes they have chilled-out live music in the evenings, and you can sit up at the bar for a drink.
Alternatively, you can reserve a plush sunbed for a day at the beach club with a minimum spend offer (of around £30), which includes a towel and waiter service.
9. Capitan Captain

What’s the vibe: Rustic, locally-loved beach club.
How much for a drink: Approx £8 for a cocktail
Top tip: If you’re getting bitten, they have free mosquito spray on request.
Located right on the main beach in a long line of beach clubs, Captain Captain stands out for its unfussy vibe and upbeat atmosphere.
It sports a boat-shaped bar and (rustic) toilets with seashell sinks, and you’ll often hear laidback live music drifting from the makeshift stage.
We stopped by here a few times and really enjoyed the easy-going vibe. Expect ‘island-time’ style service (AKA, pretty slow), but if you’re not in a hurry, it’s the perfect spot for a chilled-out afternoon cocktail.
You can rent lounge chairs here for the day, but it’s not the comfiest spot to spend the whole day. I’d choose one of the other beach clubs instead for that!
10. Punta Coco Beach Bar

What’s the vibe: Desert island beach shack
How much for a drink: Approx £7 for a cocktail
Top tip: If going there on foot, walk along the beach and then cut inland by the Casa Blanca hotel.
This place is located at Punta Coco, which is right on the south-western tip of the island, over 30 minutes walk away from the centre of town. Punta Coco is where you can sometimes spot the famous Holbox flamingos.
It’s also where you might be able to see the bioluminescence after dark – I also wrote a full guide on finding it for yourself.
Even without the wow-factor wildlife, Punta Coco is a great spot if you’re staying in the area or if you’re looking for something a little more peaceful, and boasts a front-row seat to one of the best sunsets on the island.
You can also get a buggy taxi there if you don’t feel like walking. If you do decide to walk, I recommend walking along the beach for as long as possible, as the roads can get very flooded after heavy rains.
Be warned – this is a complete castaway-style bar with just a small drinks menu and no toilet facilities, so bear this in mind when visiting. You’ll need to bring cash!
11. Tuch Holbox by Big Fish

What’s the vibe: Behind-the-beach shack for Mexican classics
How much for a drink: Approx £7 for a cocktail
Top tip: Head there in the early evening for your first post-beach margarita.
If you’re looking for Mexican classics done right, this is the spot for you.
It’s a pretty nondescript bar right behind the main beach where the Holbox sign is – the sort with swings for bar stools and shells hanging from the ceiling.
Because it’s right in the centre of everything, we ended up stopping by here multiple times and always ended up with a margarita. They serve one of the best margaritas on the island, in my opinion!
The food also gets great reviews, and while we didn’t dine here, we did dine at its sister restaurant, Big Fish, and can vouch for the spectacular octopus there.
12. Mojitos Beach Club

What’s the vibe: Stylish bar on an idyllic stretch of sand
How much for a drink: Approx £10 for a cocktail
Top tip: Careful of the hot sauce – it’s got a real Mexican kick!
Part of an upscale wellness boutique, Mojitos Beach Club is a popular spot to spend the day on plush striped sun loungers on the prettiest part of Holbox Beach.
About a 10-minute walk from the centre of town, towards Punta Mosquito, the sand here is baby soft and the sea turquoise and inviting. You can book a bed for the day for around £10 plus a minimum spend on food and drink of around £20 per person.
The drinks are pretty good, especially (unsurprisingly) the mojitos, although I would say the food was fairly uninspiring. The menu and drinks list are Mexican with a Cuban twist.
They occasionally have live music – think local musicians, as opposed to lively DJ sets.
Definitely the place for you if you’re looking for a blissful day on an unspoilt part of the beach.
13. La Playa De Ñaña

What’s the vibe: Boho-chic beach bar with super friendly service
How much for a drink: Approx £8 for a cocktail
Top tip: Try the green aguachile (shrimp marinated in spicy lime juice and cilantro)
Finally, one of my favourite Holbox beach clubs was definitely La Playa De Ñaña. This place had it all. It was centrally located, but on a quiet, pretty part of the beach, and always had a great atmosphere and super welcoming service.
The decor is classic boho island-chic, and you can rent a chair for the day with a very modest minimum spend, which is fab, because the food is delicious. This includes the use of the toilets and showers, which is really handy on Holbox beach.
You’ll find lots of people park up here to watch the sunset, so get there early to secure your spot!
14. Bocamar/Soulbox

What’s the vibe: Cute coastal charm with sea views
How much for a drink: Approx £8 for a cocktail
Top tip: Go up three flights of stairs to find the rooftop terrace for ocean views.
Bocamar was another bar we ended up at multiple times on our trip to Holbox. While we loved the rooftop terrace, we also loved sitting at the bar stools right on the sandy street and watching the bartenders muddle up cocktails.
This place is right opposite Hot Corner, the most famous bar on the island, so it’s a great spot for people watching too.
The live music from Hot Corner is usually so loud you can enjoy it at a more civilised decibel from Bocamar, or they sometimes have their own DJ on the rooftop.
There’s even a rooftop pool, so if you fancy a swim while you drink, don’t forget to pack your towel.
It’s also a seafood restaurant – we didn’t get the chance to eat there, unfortunately, but we heard great things about the ceviche!
15. Tribu Bar

What’s the vibe: Treetop bar with cultural pop-ups
How much for a drink: Approx £8 for a cocktail
Top tip: Go during happy hour (between 7-9 PM) for 241 on drinks.
This bar is actually owned by the next-door hostel – but don’t let that put you off! It’s a surprisingly nice spot nestled on a rooftop among the tree canopy with a tribal-tiki theme.
We took refuge in here one night when it was raining and worked our way through the cocktail list while taking advantage of the top happy hour deal. The bar tenders here really know what they’re doing – I recommend the espresso martini!
We also had a couple of the bar bites here, and they were surprisingly good too, especially the guacamole.
Although it’s a small place, they also sometimes have live music on, along with fun local events like margarita-making classes, salsa lessons, and open-mic nights.
Holbox Bars and Beach Clubs: FAQs
Do Holbox bars have a dress code?

No, Holbox bars generally don’t have a dress code, and you can pretty much wear whatever you like (within reason). It’s perfectly acceptable to sit at the beach bars in your swimsuits or shirtless during the day, and bars had a very casual vibe in the evenings – most people wore resort wear with sandals or flip flops.
I definitely would not recommend dressing up or wearing high heels – even though some of the bars are a little more upmarket, the streets are all sandy and often flooded, so it’s just not practical.
I generally wore loose linen pants in the evening for a casual yet classy look that also served the purpose of preventing mosquito bites.
What time do most bars in Holbox stay open until?

Bars in Holbox typically stay open late, and we found the nightlife really got going towards midnight, with the majority of bars closing around 1 to 2AM. Many of the Holbox beach clubs shut around sunset time or a little after.
Do Holbox bars and beach clubs take credit cards?

While lots of Holbox bars and beach clubs do take credit cards, I still recommend paying with cash. Bars often charge a hefty fee for using credit cards, plus regular power outages mean electronic payment methods are not the most reliable. Bring as much cash as you think you’ll need to the island, because the ATMs regularly run out.
Where is the best area to stay on Holbox Island for nightlife?

The best area to stay in Holbox for nightlife is as close to the centre of town as possible. Here are a few places I recommend:
Ser Casasandra Boutique: Five-star tropical oasis, right on the beach.
Casa Blanca: Gorgeous, lodge-style accommodation, tucked away in the town centre.
Tierra del Mar: Minimalist boutique with just six rooms and a stunning pool scene.

What are some other cool things to do in Holbox?

Alongside a lively nightlife scene, there are loads of cool things to do in Holbox. I recommend:
- Taking a tour to see the glowing bioluminescence
- Walking over the sandbank to Punta Mosquito
- Going on a boat trip to swim with whale sharks (if in season)
- Walk to Punta Coco
- Take the Three Islands boat tour
- Rent a bike to explore the island
- Go horseback riding on the beach
- Try a tequila-tasting experience guided by a local from Tequila town
