Where to Stay in Isla Holbox: Top 5 Places (With Map!)

So you’ve picked the up-and-coming, off-grid Holbox Island for your trip, what’s next? You’re probably wondering where to stay in Isla Holbox to make the most out of your time on this sandy slice of paradise.

Said to be the ‘new Tulum’ by those in the know, Isla Holbox is actually not an island, but a very large sandbank, separated from the mainland by a wildlife-filled lagoon.

This explains why all the roads are made from sand, not tarmac, and four-wheel golf buggies are used to get around, instead of cars. The island is just a mile wide at its widest point, and the populated part is about 4 miles long.

While it’s small in size, Isla Holbox is separated into around 5 distinctive areas, so it can be helpful to know which is best for your travel style.

This guide includes an overview of the top 5 places to stay on Holbox Island, what type of traveller they suit best, plus accommodation picks for every budget.

I’ll also go over some FAQs about staying in Holbox at the end.

Where to Stay on Holbox Island in More Detail

Playa Holbox

Best place to stay in Holbox for luxury

The beach at Madarina beach club in Holbox, part of Casa Las Tortugas hotel

Playa Holbox – the serene stretch of sand just north of the town centre – is by far the most idyllic place to stay on Isla Holbox.

Upscale hotels line the beach here, all the way along until the sandy road peters out into thick mangrove jungle.

Many have their own beach clubs, so you can alternate sunbathing sessions with sipping margaritas, and you’re never more than a 15-minute walk away from the lively town centre.

In front of the beach, the island’s famous sandbank takes shape daily according to the tides. At low tide, you can splash all the way along it to reach the deserted Punta Mosquito beach, where flamingos like to hang out (depending on the season).

The punta mosquito sandbank and lagoon

The beach gets quieter and the hotels more luxurious the further you get from town, with Hotel Villas Flamingos taking the crown for the most sought-after place to stay in Holbox.

It flaunts multiple statement pools, rooms with private hot tubs, and oceanview suites with stargazing lookouts in the bamboo eaves.

The main reception is pretty stunning too – housed in a sculptural building that looks like an origami bird’s nest.

There’s plenty of other good options here too, though – I have a real soft spot for Casa Las Tortugas with its gorgeous Mandarina beach club.

If you’re looking for high-quality hotels in the perfect location, Playa Holbox is the place to be.

Best Hotels in Playa Holbox

Luxury: Hotel Villas Flamingos – Iconic influencer haunt on an idyllic, far-flung stretch of the beach.

Mid-range: Casa Las Tortugas – The ultimate lesson in barefoot jungle chic, with a 10/10 location.

Budget: Casa Peregrino – Sleek island-style minimalism, just a block back from the beach.

Unique find: Aldea Kuká – Eco boutique on the beach with spa, gym, and toes-in-the-sand dining.

Holbox Centro

Best place to stay in Holbox for nightlife

Unsurprisingly, Holbox Centro is the beating heart of the island. It’s where the sandy roads criss-cross to create a tapestry of boho-chic bars, authentic taquerías, and vibey brunch spots.

It’s also where you’ll find the loudest, liveliest nightlife, from the famous local spot Hot Corner to secret rooftop bars and cosy spots with live music.

There’s a real mix of places to stay in Holbox Centro, so there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a chilled-out adults-only boutique, a family-friendly spot on the beach, or low-cost lodging with a social vibe, you’ll find it all here.

Surfboards and tables at the Mr Happy Brunch spot in Holbox centro

I’m a big fan of Tierra del Mar for its oasis-like pool area – it feels like a real retreat from the buzz of the town.

If you want to dive headfirst into the best food and nightlife on the Island, Holbox Centro is the spot for you. However, if you’re looking for long, lazy beach days and peace and quiet, I’d opt for Playa Holbox or South Beach instead.

Best Hotels in Holbox Centro

Luxury: Casa Cat Ba – Sea views steal the show at this boho beachfront spot in the heart of the action.

Mid-range: Tierra del Mar – Gorgeous adults-only boutique offering an oasis from the hustle of Holbox centro.

Budget: Tribu Hostel – colourful tribal treetop vibes steps from the beach, with private rooms and BBQ facilities.

Unique find: Luna y Sol Glamping – Adorable thatched roof bungalows with communal plunge pool and outdoor kitchen.

South Beach

Best place to stay in Holbox for relaxing

I’m not actually sure this part of the island has an official name, but I’m calling it South Beach, since it’s basically the stretch of sand between Hoblbox Centro and the southern tip of the island (Playa Punta Cocos).

The beach here is not as idyllic as Playa Holbox, and in some cases, the tide means there’s no beach at all. However, the accommodation here is good value, and you’ve still got the benefit of beachside seclusion, just a short walk from the island’s nightlife.

There are some really stunning hotels here, like AWA Boutique, which we loved for its dreamy pool area, blissed-out beach club, and exceptional breakfasts. The swim-up rooms come with a massive outdoor space, or you can opt for a room with a bathtub on the balcony instead.

A girl stepping down from her swim-up suite into a sunken seating area in the pool at AWA boutique hotel holbox

We noticed they were building quite a few new hotels along this stretch, so there’s soon to be even more choice if you choose to stay in this section of the island.

Here you can spend your days chilling on the beach, taking dips in the ocean and pulling up a front-row seat to the sunset.

When you feel like a bit more action, Holbox Centro is only a 15-minute walk along the beach. Just remember to wear waterproof shoes or sandals, because the tides mean your feet sometimes get wet along the way!

Best Hotels in South Beach

Luxury: AWA Boutique – Super stylish spot pulled right up to the sand with a stunning pool scene and beach club.

Mid-range: Coccoloba – Highly-rated aparthotel with dreamy minimalist interiors and a rooftop pool.

Budget: Casa del Viento – Great-value jungle retreat with moody, modern decor and a shady pool area.

Unique find: Casa Muuch – Beachfront boutique with infinity pool and home-from-home feeling.

Punta Coco

Best place to stay in Holbox for wildlife

A girl walking along the deserted playa punta coco at sunrise

Punta Coco is right at the southernmost tip of Isla Holbox, where seashell-hued beaches give way to mangrove lagoons.

It’s about a 30-minute walk from the centre of town, but it can sometimes feel like longer because the roads get flooded and you’ll have to detour along the beach.

Punta Coco is mostly known as one of the top spots in Holbox for wildlife viewing. Sometimes you’ll see flamingos ruffling their feathers here, and there are lots of other species of birds to look out for around the lagoon.

It’s also one of the top two places on the island to see bioluminescence, so if that’s a priority for you, you might want to consider staying here. The phenomenon is tied to the lunar calendar, so sometimes the best chance of seeing it is in the middle of the night. If you’re staying nearby, that makes it a lot easier to get out and see it at its brightest.

Read more tips on seeing the Holbox bioluminescence here.

Swings overlooking the sea at punta coco bar

Things are pretty quiet around here, although there are a couple of cocktail shacks on the beach for watching the sunset. Accommodation is very good value too, since it’s so far from the centre.

One of the best in the area is Nomade Temple (pictured below), which offers breathtaking tree-house style accommodation and is a little bit closer to the centre than some of the other spots in Punta Coco.

If you’re looking for total peace and quiet and would rather be at one with nature than knocking back margaritas, this is definitely the spot for you!

Best Hotels in Punta Coco

Luxury: Naay Boutique Hotel – Luxe facilities in the wilderness, with classy coastal decor.

Mid-range: Casa Noma-Noma – Earthy, eco-friendly wellness retreat on the beach with a tropical pool.

Budget: Hotel Casa HX – Cosy, palm-thatched boutique with jungle-view rooms – some with private pools!

Unique find: Nomade Temple – Iconic homage to the jungle, with beach and tree-house suites available.

Holbox Ferry

A statue of a whale shark on Holbox island by the ferry port

Holbox Ferry is the area – you guessed it – right by the ferry port. It’s next door to Holbox Centro but on the opposite side to the beach, so it can be a bit of a walk to get to the sand.

I would say this is probably the most run-down part of the island, but it could work if you’re on a tight budget, since accommodation tends to be the cheapest in this area. It is close to all the nightlife of the centre, and you’re also close to the ferry port if you’re on a flying visit to Isla Holbox.

Boats in the marina at Holbox Ferry

There’s a mix of hostels and small family-run boutiques in this area, plus a few more upscale villas if you’re looking for a little more luxury.

Ultimately, I would say this area is probably for you if you’re travelling on a shoestring or just looking for somewhere close by to rest your head for the night after a long journey to the island.

Best Hotels in Holbox Ferry

Luxury: Casa Naay – The privacy and facilities of a four-bed villa, right next door to the marina.

Mid-range: Hotel Boutique Naj Casa – Clean and comfortable spot with a bar and swimming pool.

Budget: Mis Sueños Holbox – Pretty, minimalist boutique with a pool, just a few minutes walk from the port.

Unique find: Coconut by ÓOL Hotels – Coconut coloured accommodation with a wavy-edged pool.

Where to Stay in Isla Holbox: FAQs

When’s the best time to visit Isla Holbox?

A beach club on Holbox beach in the sunshine

The best time to visit Isla Holbox is between December to April if you’re looking for warm, dry weather and ideal conditions for the beach. The rainy season is between June to October, but this is also when you’ll have the best chance of seeing whale sharks and bioluminescence, so it could be a good time to visit for wildlife lovers.

Where is the best place to stay in Holbox for a wedding?

A cocktail at sunset from the rooftop bar at AWA boutique hotel in Holbox Mexico - Best holbox bars and beach clubs

It depends on the kind of wedding you’re looking for, but there are a few larger hotels which offer low-key wedding packages, such as Mystique Holbox, which also boasts a fantastic location right on the beach.

You could also opt for a more DIY approach by booking a large villa to suit your party, like the gorgeous Casa Hood, which sleeps 20, or the laidback Casa Milu, which sleeps 12.

How long to stay in Holbox?

The swimming pool and suites at AWA boutique hotel

While Holbox is a small island, it’s fairly remote, so you’ll want to spend at least three days here to make the most of your trip. There are plenty of cool things to do in Holbox, including walking the famous sandbank, checking out iconic wildlife from flamingos to whale sharks and bioluminescence, and spending the day in one of the blissed-out beach clubs.

If you have longer to spare, you can easily spend over a week in Holbox, enjoying the chilled-out tropical vibes, swimming in the turquoise ocean, brunch hopping around the island, or trying cultural experiences like tequila tasting.

What’s the best way to get to Isla Holbox?

A colourful sign in the centre of Chiquila, Mexico

Getting to Isla Holbox usually involves a bus or taxi transfer from Cancun, followed by a ferry from Chiquila. There is a public coach service between the centre of Cancun and Chiquila, which takes around two and a half hours. From Chiquila, ferries to Isla Holbox operate roughly every 30 minutes, operated by two companies: 9 Hermanos and Holbox Express. The crossing takes about 30 minutes.

Cancun is served by a large international airport, so it’s easy to find flights that land there.

What are the best things to do in Holbox, Mexico?

Glowing blue Bioluminescence in Holbox

Some of the best things to do in Holbox include:

  • Taking a tour to see the glowing bioluminescence
  • Walking over the sandbank to Punta Mosquito
  • Going on a boat trip to swim with whale sharks (if in season)
  • Walk to Punta Coco
  • Take the Three Islands boat tour
  • Rent a bike to explore the island
  • Go horseback riding on the beach
  • Try a tequila-tasting experience guided by a local from Tequila town

What are the best restaurants and beach clubs in Holbox?

The outside of a boho bar in Holbox

There are loads of cool restaurants and vibey beach clubs to try in Holbox. I recommend Mandarina Beach Club, Fuego at AWA boutique hotel, Bar Zomay for sunset drinks, Luuma for hidden garden-inspired dining and ROOTS for the ultimate lobster pizza.

Check out more of the best bars and beach clubs in Holbox.

Teensy reminder that Santorini looks like this nex Teensy reminder that Santorini looks like this next month ✨

September is honestly one of the dreamiest times to visit Santorini.

You still get that gorgeous Greek island sunshine, the sea is warm enough to swim in, and the summer crowds start to feel a little less chaotic.

It’s also usually less windy than July and August, which makes it the perfect time for sunset catamaran cruises, beach days and wandering those famous cliffside towns without feeling quite so frazzled.

A few things I’d add to your September Santorini list:

🌅 Take a sunset catamaran cruise around the caldera
🍷 Go wine tasting and end with sunset views at Santo
🥾 Hike from Fira to Oia before the day gets too hot
🏖 Spend an afternoon on the black sand beaches
🎬 Watch a film under the stars at an outdoor cinema
🤍 Explore quieter villages like Pyrgos, Megalochori or Emporio

Ofc, Fira and Oia are still busy, but go early enough and you can get those dreamy blue dome streets almost to yourself.

Basically, September gives you the best bits of summer Santorini, but with a slower, more romantic feel.

Comment ‘September’ and I’ll send you my full guide to visiting Santorini next month, including what to do, what to pack and the tips I wish I’d known before going 🫶

Im a firm believer that things always work out how Im a firm believer that things always work out how they’re meant to 🫶

While there have been plenty of bumps in the road and I’m still learning and growing, I find it always helps to look back and think about how far you’ve come already ❤️

About 6 years ago I got made redundant from my job at a travel magazine in the middle of COVID… I was pretty devastated at the time but things have a funny way of working out. Being made redundant made me realise that being employed isn’t the only way to your dream job!

It’s not been easy, in fact it’s been really f*cking hard at times and I’ve wished I could just clock off at the end of the day. I’m still a very long away from where I want to be. But I like to believe I’m building something the little girl in these photos would think was pretty cool 🤞

So if you like going on holiday as much as I do (and always have done lol), follow along for more tips, itineraries, and a little bit of real life too 🫶

Save this for the dreamiest Provencal road trip 🍷✨ Save this for the dreamiest Provencal road trip 🍷✨

This is your cheat code to combining Provence and the Côte d’Azur in one week, without feeling like you’re constantly rushing around.

Think cobbled old towns, lavender fields, morning markets, rosé in the vines, beach clubs, St Tropez yacht spotting, postcard harbours and a boat trip through the bluest water you’ve ever seen.

The rough itinerary looks like this:

Day 1: Arrive in Marseille, drive to Aix-en-Provence and spend the afternoon wandering the Old Town

Day 2: Head to the lavender fields, then visit Bonnieux and Lourmarin for cute village strolls and lunch

Day 3: Spend the morning at the Aix markets, then go wine tasting in the countryside

Wine tasting options:
🍷 A guided château wine tasting tour from Aix if nobody wants to be the designated driver (I’ve included my top recommendation in the full guide, comment ‘Provence’ to have this sent to your DMs).
🍷 A luxe vineyard stay and cellar visit in a nearby chateau like @chateaudelagaude if you want to make it more of a bucket-list moment

Day 4: Visit Avignon in the morning, then drive down to Saint-Maxime for your Côte d’Azur base

Day 5: Take the ferry to St Tropez, explore the Old Town, then choose between a chilled Saint-Maxime beach club or a livelier Pampelonne beach day

Day 6: Move to Cassis and take a boat trip through Calanques National Park

Day 7: Enjoy a slow morning in Cassis or Marseille before heading home

It’s the perfect Provence and Côte d’Azur itinerary if you want the pretty Provence bits, the beachy Riviera bits and plenty of food, wine and views in between.

Follow and comment ‘Provence’ if you want the full breakdown, including where to stay, transport tips, wine tasting links, and beach club recommendations 🫶
