Where to Stay in Miami: Best Places, Areas & Hotels

An up close image of the Carlyle hotel on Ocean Drive - where to stay in Miami

Wondering where to stay in Miami to make the most of your trip to this iconic Florida city?

I’ve trawled all of the top neighbourhoods to deliver this list of the best places to stay for every type of traveller, whether you’re looking for luxury, travelling on a budget, or planning to party.

It goes without saying that most people choose to stay in South Beach, especially if it’s your first time in Miami.

While the accommodation here can be pricey, this is where you’ll find some of the Magic City’s top attractions, from the colourful lifeguard towers on the beach to the pastel-splashed Art Deco hotels along Ocean Drive.

However, if you’re planning a follow-up visit to the city or looking for something a bit different, this guide covers all of Miami’s most popular postcodes, with hotel recommendations in every price bracket.

I’ve also answered some things I often get asked about visiting Miami in the FAQ section, but if you have more questions, don’t be shy! Just drop me a line in the comments.

South Beach

Best place to stay in Miami for first-timers

A colourful orange and yellow art deco lifeguard tower in South Beach, Miami

South Beach – or SoBe as it is affectionately known – is the beating heart of Miami Beach and the best place to stay for your first foray into the city.

There’s plenty to see and do here, from people-watching at the bars on Ocean Drive, to shopping in Lincoln Mall and grabbing dinner on Española Way.

You can spend your days soaking up the sun on the vast, sugar-fine sandy beach, admiring the iconic lifeguard towers, and riding a bike along the famous promenade.

South Beach is also where you’ll see some of the most famous Art Deco architecture in the world, many of which are home to gorgeous, retro-luxe hotels like The Betsy. If your budget can stretch, this is my top hotel recommendation for Miami.

I’ve stayed at The Betsy a few times, and keep coming back for its dreamy interiors and laidback luxury vibe. It’s also in the most perfect location, steps from the beach and Española Way.

I’ve also listed some other hotel recommendations below to help you find the perfect pick.

Best Hotels in South beach

A girl lounging by the pool at The Betsy Hotel in South Beach Miami

Luxury: The Betsy – Iconic, landmark hotel with a drop-dead gorgeous courtyard pool, right on Ocean Drive.

Mid-range: Avalon – Retro-cool Art Deco icon on Ocean Drive with a vibey restaurant and cocktail bar, perfect for people watching.

Budget: Tropics Hotel – Cosy spot, one block from the beach with a communal pool, BBQ area and kitchen facilities.

Unique find: Esme – Gorgeous maximalist design hotel on Española Way, with a dreamy rooftop bar, plunge pool, and restaurants.

Mid Beach

Best place to stay in Miami for luxury

A sandy pathway leading to the beach in Mid Beach Miami

When I want Miami at its most polished and grown-up, I always gravitate to Mid-Beach.

This stretch between South Beach and North Beach blends beachfront glamour with a calmer, more refined vibe.

It’s home to some of the city’s most impressive hotels – think The Faena, The Miami Beach EDITION, and The Fontainebleau – where you can dip between world-class restaurants, private beaches, and chic pool decks without ever straying far from your room.

It’s definitely the sort of place that’s more about indulgence than non-stop party energy.

You can start your day with a sunrise walk along the beachfront boardwalk, browse design boutiques in the Faena District, then settle in for dinner at a celebrity-chef restaurant or a show at the Faena Theatre.

And you’re still only a leisurely stroll or short trolley ride from the buzz of SoBe.

In summary, Mid-Beach is a solid choice if you’re looking for a luxe, resort-style holiday, with a little city-slick nightlife thrown in. While most gravitate towards the famous Fontainebleau, I always choose The Faena instead.

Not only is it ten times prettier in my opinion, but you’ll also get better service, exceptional food, and an all-around classier vibe. You can find the rest of my hotel recommendations for Mid-Beach below.

Best Hotels in Mid-Beach

A unique sculpture of a skeleton in the gardens of the Faena Hotel

Luxury: Faena Hotel – A Valentine-red colour scheme and sprawling views along Miami Beach put Faena Hotel at the top of the luxury list.

Mid-range: The Palms Hotel & Spa – A four-star hotel with a real resort feel and a nod to the tropics, plus a palm-studded pool area and beach club.

Budget: Alamo Hotel – Clean and comfy accomodation in Mid-Beach, just steps from the sand.

Unique find: Hotel Trouvail – Adorable, cottage-core rooms and studios with a bar, restaurant and swimming pool.

Wynwood

Best place to stay in Miami for art-lovers

A irl in a white dress admiring a colourful mural at Wynwood Walls in Miami

If you’re headed to Miami for its creativity, colour, and contemporary culture, stay in Wynwood.

The neighbourhood feels like an open-air museum, with massive murals stretching across warehouse walls, independent galleries tucked along every block, and the iconic Wynwood Walls anchoring it all.

It’s the ideal base for gallery-hopping during the day and soaking up local nightlife after dark.

I love waking up here, grabbing a coffee from Panther Coffee, and wandering through the district before the crowds arrive. There’s always a new pop-up exhibition, concept boutique or craft brewery to discover.

If you want to split your time between Miami Beach and Miami City, this is a strong contender for your city base!

There are a handful of fab hotels in Wynwood. I particularly like Arlo Wynwood for its overall vibe and social scene, but you can’t go too far wrong with most hotels in this creative hub.

Best Hotels in Wynwood

Tables and chairs at a rooftop bar in Wynwood with the Miami skyline in the distance

Luxury: Sentral Wynwood – Swish studios and apartments with a rooftop pool, gym, games room, restaurant and coffee shop, in the heart of the action.

Mid-range: Arlo Wynwood – Minimalist rooms plus Insta-worthy backdrops elsewhere, uber cool bars, terraces and a rooftop pool.

Budget: Wynwood Bungalows by Renzzi – Back-to-basics apartments within walking distance of Wynwood Walls, with a garden pool.

Unique find: Moxy Miami Wynwood – Vibrant design from the outdoor murals to the arcade game room and pool terrace, plus free bikes for rent.

Downtown

Best place to stay in Miami for nightlife

The Kaseya Center in Miami Downrown, home to the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association

When I’m in the mood for high-rise energy and late nights, Downtown Miami is my go-to.

The area has transformed in recent years, now filled with trendy hotels, rooftop bars, cocktail lounges and clubs that cater to a stylish, grown-up crowd.

Staying here means you’re steps from spots like E11EVEN, The Wharf, and a whole network of venues around Bayfront and the riverfront.

By day, you can explore Bayside Marketplace, snap pics for Instagram at the Museum of Ice Cream, or browse contemporary works at the Pérez Art Museum, or hop on a Millionaire’s home cruise of Biscayne Bay.

But it’s after dark that Downtown really comes alive.

If your perfect Miami stay includes skyline views, pulsing music, and the ability to walk (or taxi) between incredible nights out, Downtown is the place to plant your suitcase.

Best Hotels in Downtown Miami

Pier5 at Bayside Marketplace in Downtown Miami

Luxury: Hotel Beaux Arts – As elegant as the name suggests, with a skyscraper-view pool, marble-clad bathrooms and multiple fine dining restaurants.

Mid-range: The Elser Hotel Miami – Japandi-modern studios with sweeping city views from the pool and rooftop terrace

Budget: CitizenM Miami World Center – Cool and colourful city bolthole opposite the Kaseya Center Stadium.

Unique find: Eurostars Langford – If the London Underground were a historic hotel in Miami, this would be it.

Coconut Grove

Best place to stay in Miami for families

Vizcaya House and Gardens in Coconut Grove Miami

Looking for a slower, more relaxed experience, away from the hustle of the city? Check in to Coconut Grove.

A little outside the city centre, it has winding streets, waterfront parks, and a neighbourhood feel that’s perfect for those travelling with family.

There are a few things to do in the area, like strolling through Peacock Park, exploring the shaded paths at The Kampong, or visiting the historic Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, which feels straight out of Europe.

Or, you can lean into real Miami living, with brunch at a café, wandering the boutique shops, and letting the kids run off steam along the marina

Despite the leafy feel, you’re only about a 10-minute drive from Downtown Miami and 20 minutes from South Beach, so everything else is within easy reach.

Best Hotels in coconut Grove

A shady pool area at a hotel in Miami

Luxury: The Ritz-Carlton – A luxe classic with grand styling, an impressive spa, and rooms with balcony views.

Mid-range: Mr. C Miami – Cool, colour-drenched rooms and a rooftop pool in a quirky building overlooking the bay.

Budget: Arya Hotel & Suites – Clean, modern accommodation opposite Peacock Park with a swimming pool.

Unique find: Mayfair House Hotel and Garden – An architectural feast for the eyes, with eye-popping interiors, a rooftop pool, and an acclaimed grill and restaurant.

Upper East Side

Best place to stay in Miami on a budget

Healthy breakfast items and coffee at Pura Vida brunch spot in Upper East Side Miami

If you’re travelling on a tighter budget but still want hotels with some style near the action, the Upper East Side is for you.

This underrated area mixes mid-century motels, restored retro properties, and independent guesthouses that offer excellent value compared to beachfront and city centre neighbourhoods.

It’s a quieter part of the city, but I think that’s its charm. Plus, you get great access to MiMo (Miami Modern) architecture, vintage stores, and eclectic dining spots.

You’re also pretty close to Miami hotspots like the Design District and Wynwood here, while it’s only a 15-minute drive from North Beach too, when you want to feel the sand on your toes.

There aren’t really any luxury hotels here, which is why I’ve listed The Moore below under luxury. It’s not technically in the Upper East Side, but it’s a stunning option if you want to be in the next-door Design District.

All of the other options are great value for money and put you right on Biscayne Boulevard, where you can hop between cafés and thrift shops.

Best Hotels in Upper East Side

A colourful hotel building in Miami

Luxury: The Moore Miami– Oh-so-chic interiors with elevated touches like a restaurant serving sushi and a games lounge, in the Design District.

Mid-range: The Treehouse – Bright and airy whitewashed studios with free parking, near Upper East Side cafes and bakeries.

Budget: The New Yorker Hotel – Colourful, hipster motel with parking, near a park with facilities like tennis courts and an outdoor gym.

Unique find: The Vagabond – Restored, all-American ‘motel’ with a palm-shaded pool and fun, kitsch design choices.

Brickell

Best place to stay in Miami for professionals

Skyscrapers in Miami's vibrant Brickell district

Whenever work brings me to Miami (or I just want a sleek, city-forward stay), I book into Brickell.

Often described as Miami’s financial district, Brickell is full of luxury high-rises, polished hotels, rooftop pools, and top-tier restaurants that feel perfect for business and leisure combined.

I love starting my mornings at Brickell City Centre Mall, grabbing a coffee, and wandering through its shaded walkways before meetings.

Evenings here are pretty fun too. Think upscale dining, elegant cocktail spots, and stunning rooftop lounges overlooking the skyline.

You’re only minutes from Downtown, and it’s a short ride to the beaches and Key Biscayne, making Brickell ideal if you’re looking for convenience with a more cosmopolitan take on Miami.

It’s where I stay when I want the city at my fingertips and a gorgeous view from the balcony.

Best Hotels in Brickell

A moody cocktail bar in Miami

Luxury: Four Seasons Miami – A luxury icon in every major city, the Four Seasons brings its usual palatial styling and five-star facilities.

Mid-range: EAST Miami – A sky-scraping spot with quirky, industrial-jungle style pool deck and restaurant, plus a moody cocktail bar.

Budget: CitizenM Miami Brickell – Bijou and cheerful rooms with trendy facilities like a rooftop pool and artsy lounge zone.

Unique find: Dua Miami – Charming rainbow-splashed building with a candy-striped pool terrace, plus a bar, spa and fitness suite.

Where to stay in Miami: FAQs

Where to stay in Miami for Art Basel?

A road sign for Ocean Drive in Miami South Beach, with a tent for an art festival in the background

I recommend basing yourself in South Beach or Mid-Beach for easy access to the Miami Beach Convention Center, the heart of Art Basel. The Faena District and Collins Avenue offer upscale hotels within walking distance of satellite fairs, beach installations, and nightlife.

What are the best hotels in Miami?

A girl sitting by the courtyard pool at the Betsy hotel Miami

For five-star style, try The Setai, The Betsy Hotel, or Faena Miami Beach.

For chic mid-range options, The Goodtime Hotel and Esme Miami Beach mix art deco flair with a top-tier location.

Downtown, EAST Miami and Hotel Beaux Arts suit design lovers who prefer the urban energy of the city.

How to get to Miami?

A view of Miami Beach from a plane window when coming into land at Miami International Airport

You can fly into Miami International Airport (MIA), which is just a 20–25-minute drive from South Beach. Ubers are plentiful and affordable, and you can order one right from the airport for around $25.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) is an alternative airport about 45 minutes away, often with more flight options and lower fares.

What are some of the top things to do in Miami?

Palm Court and Pink Parasols at the Dior Cafe in the Design District Miami

There are loads of cool things to do in Miami, depending on your preferences! My favourites include:

  • Relaxing on the beach
  • Checking out the murals of Wynwood
  • Shopping and spotting sculptures in the Design District
  • Going on a little cruise around Biscayne Bay
  • Visit Little Havana for live music and Cuban coffee
  • Taking a trip to the Everglades National Park

What’s the best way to get around Miami?

A bike at a CitiBike station in Miami Beach

I recommend rideshares or taxis like Uber for short hops, and renting a car if you plan to explore beyond Miami Beach.

Within South Beach, walking or hiring a CitiBike is the easiest (and most scenic) way to get around. You can download the app in advance or just pay at the booth.

Teensy reminder that Santorini looks like this nex Teensy reminder that Santorini looks like this next month ✨

September is honestly one of the dreamiest times to visit Santorini.

You still get that gorgeous Greek island sunshine, the sea is warm enough to swim in, and the summer crowds start to feel a little less chaotic.

It’s also usually less windy than July and August, which makes it the perfect time for sunset catamaran cruises, beach days and wandering those famous cliffside towns without feeling quite so frazzled.

A few things I’d add to your September Santorini list:

🌅 Take a sunset catamaran cruise around the caldera
🍷 Go wine tasting and end with sunset views at Santo
🥾 Hike from Fira to Oia before the day gets too hot
🏖 Spend an afternoon on the black sand beaches
🎬 Watch a film under the stars at an outdoor cinema
🤍 Explore quieter villages like Pyrgos, Megalochori or Emporio

Ofc, Fira and Oia are still busy, but go early enough and you can get those dreamy blue dome streets almost to yourself.

Basically, September gives you the best bits of summer Santorini, but with a slower, more romantic feel.

Comment ‘September’ and I’ll send you my full guide to visiting Santorini next month, including what to do, what to pack and the tips I wish I’d known before going 🫶

Im a firm believer that things always work out how Im a firm believer that things always work out how they’re meant to 🫶

While there have been plenty of bumps in the road and I’m still learning and growing, I find it always helps to look back and think about how far you’ve come already ❤️

About 6 years ago I got made redundant from my job at a travel magazine in the middle of COVID… I was pretty devastated at the time but things have a funny way of working out. Being made redundant made me realise that being employed isn’t the only way to your dream job!

It’s not been easy, in fact it’s been really f*cking hard at times and I’ve wished I could just clock off at the end of the day. I’m still a very long away from where I want to be. But I like to believe I’m building something the little girl in these photos would think was pretty cool 🤞

Save this for the dreamiest Provencal road trip 🍷✨ Save this for the dreamiest Provencal road trip 🍷✨

This is your cheat code to combining Provence and the Côte d’Azur in one week, without feeling like you’re constantly rushing around.

Think cobbled old towns, lavender fields, morning markets, rosé in the vines, beach clubs, St Tropez yacht spotting, postcard harbours and a boat trip through the bluest water you’ve ever seen.

The rough itinerary looks like this:

Day 1: Arrive in Marseille, drive to Aix-en-Provence and spend the afternoon wandering the Old Town

Day 2: Head to the lavender fields, then visit Bonnieux and Lourmarin for cute village strolls and lunch

Day 3: Spend the morning at the Aix markets, then go wine tasting in the countryside

Wine tasting options:
🍷 A guided château wine tasting tour from Aix if nobody wants to be the designated driver (I’ve included my top recommendation in the full guide, comment ‘Provence’ to have this sent to your DMs).
🍷 A luxe vineyard stay and cellar visit in a nearby chateau like @chateaudelagaude if you want to make it more of a bucket-list moment

Day 4: Visit Avignon in the morning, then drive down to Saint-Maxime for your Côte d’Azur base

Day 5: Take the ferry to St Tropez, explore the Old Town, then choose between a chilled Saint-Maxime beach club or a livelier Pampelonne beach day

Day 6: Move to Cassis and take a boat trip through Calanques National Park

Day 7: Enjoy a slow morning in Cassis or Marseille before heading home

It’s the perfect Provence and Côte d’Azur itinerary if you want the pretty Provence bits, the beachy Riviera bits and plenty of food, wine and views in between.

Follow and comment ‘Provence’ if you want the full breakdown, including where to stay, transport tips, wine tasting links, and beach club recommendations 🫶
