The best Koh Tao beaches give paradise a run for its money, with marshmallow-soft sand and Evian-clear water that’s begging to be snorkelled in.
This dreamy little island is located a two-hour ferry ride from the nearest airport on Koh Samui. Its slightly off-grid location means the beaches are beautifully uncrowded, and the whole island has an intrepid charm and traveller community.
It’s giving Leo DiCaprio’s movie The Beach – just with better nightlife. The whole island is only 8 square miles, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in sand.
After a recent trip there, I’ve compiled a quick cheat sheet to the best Koh Tao beaches for you to tick off during a visit to the island. I recommend renting a scooter to see most of the beaches on Koh Tao, as taxis can be expensive.
Below you can find the complete guide to Koh Tao’s best beaches, but if you have any more questions, just let me know in the comments!

7 of the Best Koh Tao Beaches for Every Traveller
1. Ao Hin Wong Bay

When we turned up at this beach, I turned to my husband and declared this my new favourite beach in the whole entire world.
This gorgeous golden nugget of sand is located on the rugged east coast of the island, and requires a bit of a hair-raising scooter ride to reach (with gradients so steep our little moped only just made it). But oh boy, is it worth it when you do get there.
Served by a castaway-style reggae bar, this beach delivers all the chill vibes for a dreamy day by the sea. Beware – the daquiris are strong!
Bean bag beach mats are sprinkled over the sand – arrive in the morning to bag yourself a shady spot at the back. The snorkelling was also some of the best we saw on the island here, and you can swim out around the rocks on the left for the best coral.
How to Get There
You can reach Ao Hin Wong beach in about 10 minutes by scooter from Sairee. There are no hotels or resorts nearby, and the parking for scooters is a short walk from the beach itself. You’ll need 20THB in cash to park your scooter.
Where to Stay Nearby
Freedom Beach is one of the most secluded beaches on the island, so the nearest accommodation is a short scooter ride away, back towards Sairee. I recommend Mar Ozo KohTao for a modern stay just outside the hustle and bustle.
2. Tanote Bay

Tanote Bay often tops lists of the best beaches on Kao Tao, and when you arrive, it’s easy to see why.
This gorgeous sweep of creamy white sand is also located on the island’s pristine East Coast, but is fringed by bars and hotels for a bit more of a buzz. It’s famous for its giant rock, which daredevils climb using a singular rope and then launch themselves off the top.
The water in Tanote Bay is warm, still, and diamond-clear, making it a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling. In fact, we even saw a few baby reef sharks just by wading in the shallows.
If you’re looking for a long, lazy day on the beach with a little selection of bars and restaurants, this spot is for you!
How to Get There
Tanote Bay is about a 15-minute scooter ride across the island from Sairee. Renting a scooter is by far the easiest and cheapest way to get around the island, and you can rent one from most hotels and accommodation providers. There’s free parking for scooters at Tanote Bay, a short walk from the sand.
Where to Stay Nearby
If you want to stay right on the sand itself, I recommend the pretty Lub d Koh Tao Tanote Resort. It has a gorgeous infinity pool perched right on the beach, clean minimalist rooms with balconies, and daily entertainment for when you don’t fancy the scooter ride into Sairee.
3. Shark Bay

No list of the best Koh Tao beaches could be complete without Shark Bay – one of the most popular snorkelling spots on the island.
A popular hang-out for blacktip reef sharks – hence the name – this spot also boasts electric blue water and baby-soft sand. If you want to spend a day dipping in and out of the water, ticking off Koh Tao’s famous marine life, and soaking up the hot Thai sun, this place is for you.
If the name scares you, don’t worry! Reef sharks are typically very small and shy and are no threat to humans. You might also be able to spot sea turtles on a recce of the offshore coral.
How to Get There
Shark Bay is about a 12-minute scooter ride from Sairee. Follow signs for Rocky Resort or Haad Tien Beach Resort. Parking and entrance to the bay is between 50-100 THB, depending on where you park.
Where to Stay Nearby
Villas Del Sol Koh Tao is a dreamy boutique collection of three villas, each with their own infinity pool overlooking Shark Bay, and luxurious self-catering accommodation for a couple or a larger group.
4. Chalok Baan Kao Bay

Right by the entrance to the iconic John Suwan viewpoint, this hidden cove hardly attracts any tourists, and it’s hard to understand why.
Flaunting a vast swathe of marzipan-coloured sand, the water is calm and shallow, and you can wade out for a while before the sand begins to shelve off – a perfect spot for paddling.
Perhaps it’s the lack of snorkelling opportunities that keeps this beach so calm and quiet, but we found it was perfect for cooling off in after the hike to the viewpoint.
In the afternoons, the shallow water warms to a balmy temperature, perfect for taking a bath-like dip. Or, you can pitch your towel under the shade of a palm tree to get lost in a good book.
Koppee Beach Club is a fab spot for brunch or a cocktail overlooking the water.
How to Get There
Chalok Baan Kao Bay is a short, 11-minute scooter ride from the centre of Sairee. You can park for free on the road opposite the beach.
Where to Stay Nearby
Chintakiri Resort is a chilled-out spot nestled in the hillside overlooking the bay, with beautiful sea-view rooms, primed for watching the sunset, and a stunning infinity pool
5. On the Rock Beach

On the Rock beach is a tiny little cove we stumbled on by accident when trying to access Shark Bay for the first time.
It’s nestled right next door to the famous snorkelling paradise, and has a real bohemian feel, with a castaway cocktail bar and chairs arranged sporadically over the rocks that shelve off into the sea.
While the entrance to the sea is a little rocky (you may need water shoes), the water is diamond-clear, and it’s a fantastic spot for a quick snorkel followed by a cocktail overlooking the sea.
You’ll see all of the same marine life as at next-door Shark Bay, so it’s definitely worth a stop!
How to Get There
Scooter parking is free on the road up the short hill from the beach, and it takes about 12 minutes to ride there from Sairee.
Where to Stay Nearby
If you’re looking for no-frills bungalows nestled in the jungle overlooking the ocean, Taatoh Seaview Resort is for you. It’s got a Robinson Crusoe tropical hideaway vibe, with steep steps taking you straight from the treehouse-style suites into the water.
6. Taa Toh Lagoon Beach and Freedom Beach

Located on the other side of the small peninsula from On the Rock beach, these two relaxed wedges of sand are perfect for getting away from the crowds.
They both face west, which means the sunsets here are spectacular. There’s clear, turquoise water, plenty of shade courtesy of the palm trees, and hardly anyone else around.
Again, this one is close to John Suwan viewpoint, so perfect for a quick dip after the short (but sweaty) hike to the top.
How to Get There
Tah Toh Lagoon Beach is a short, 10-minute scooter ride from Sairee, and you can park at the entrance the John Suwan viewpoint (also called Freedom Beach car park), and it costs 100 THB to park and enter.
Where to Stay Nearby
If you want to be steps from the sand, Koh Tao Freedom Beach resort has set up camp right on top of the beach. The sea view bungalows are fairly basic but boast sensational sea views, and the hotel also has a restaurant for when you don’t feel like going out.
7. Sairee Beach

Sairee Beach is the most lively strip of sand on the island, lining the edge of Koh Tao’s busiest town.
While not as idyllic as some of the other options on this list, it still offers spectacular sunsets as the tide draws out and the sky paints the sea pink. The beach is lined with boho bars, restaurants, and beach clubs, meaning it’s easy to find a cocktail to watch the show.
After dark, this beach stays equally lively with beanbags dotted all over the sand and performances from top fire dancers every night. We spent most evenings here after dark, sipping cocktails and watching the sparks fly!
How to Get There
Sairee beach is within walking distance of Sairee town centre, or a short 5-minute scooter from the island’s main pier at Mae Nam Head.
Where to Stay Nearby
If you want to be within walking distance of the action, DD Hut Koh Tao is a beautiful beach resort perched on the rocks at the southern end of the sand. It;s far away enough to offer some peace and quiet at night, and has nautical-themed suites with sea views, plus an infinity pool.
Bonus: Koh Nang Beach

I’m including Koh Nang Beach as a ‘bonus’, because it’s not really on Koh Tao but actually on a small islet called Koh Nang Yuan, just offshore.
It’s famous for its stunning sandbanks that join the dots between the mini mountains of emerald, with a panoramic viewpoint offering an iconic Koh Tao photo opportunity.
How to Get There
The best way to see it is on a boat tour of Koh Nang Yuan and various other hidden coves around the islets.
This top-rated tour includes pick up and drop-off from your accommodation, a dozen different snorkelling stops, and visits to the island’s best viewpoints, plus a Thai lunch and free underwater photography.
Where to Stay Nearby
There’s only really one resort on Koh Nang Yuan – the Nangyuan Island Dive Resort.
Depending on the tide, you are sometimes completely cut off from the mainland here, so it’s only worth considering if you’re looking for a truly ‘get-away-from-it-all’ experience.
It has luxurious villas with private pools, a Thai restaurant, and a dive centre on site for those looking to dig deeper into Koh Tao’s incredible marine life.
